Quand la personne s'avère être un personnage: la mise à nu de la construction discursive du personnage dans le fait divers

From the person to the character: revealing the narrative and discursive constructedness at work in characterizationAngela Carter's « The Fall River Axe Murder » is about the murder committed by Lizzie Borden which was widely reported in the newspapers of the time, mainly in the news items page. Even though Lizzie was a real historical person, her representation in Carter's short story draws the reader's attention to the narrative and discursive constructedness of the character, and underlines the nature of representation as a textual experiment widely different from the historical experience. While the news item highlights the otherness of its subjects, Carter's short story presents him/her as a character in conflict with patriarchy. The narrative options adopted by these two narrative genres are at the origin of the metamorphoses of the person into a character. Alors que le fait divers feint dépeindre une expérience réelle, autour de vraies personnes, le narrateur de « The Fall River Axe Murder » tient à attirer l'attention du lecteur à la nature du texte en tant qu'expérimentation textuelle et du personnage en tant que construction discursive. Alors que la gestion narrative du fait divers transforme la personne en un personnage marginal, la gestion narrative de la nouvelle cartérienne produit un personnage en conflit avec le patriarcat.Les options narratives des deux genres sont au coeur de la métamorphose de la personne en un personnage. Ceci dit, le personnage dans le récit cartérien n'est pas simplement une fonction romanesque et esthétique mais aussi une fonction politique et discursive.
