Summary:This article aims to perceive the representations about amnesty, as well as the disputes of power and word meaning of those who are engaged in this issue. We aim to bring to light the differential treatment received by the military who were granted amnesty by the Brazilian Ministry of Defense. The Ministry of Defense interprets that the military who were granted amnesty must submit to a specific legal regime and ends by suppressing their rights. Thus, using discourse analysis and archival research, we seek to show how this discourse is constructed within the State, and the existence of a distinction that suppresses rights, the dignity of the amnestied, and, why not admit, the very meaning of amnesty.
