Summary: | The sustainability of economic activity depends on its being culturally acceptable, socially just, economically viable and environmentally friendly. The objective of this study was to evaluate the social situation of Axixa Tocantins, Tocantins, Brazil, and its potential to generate income and thereupon propose a sustainable community activity. The group of traditional inhabitants, the " quebradeiras de coco", presents a precarious social situation. They collect babassu fruits (Orbignya spp.) of the region and remove their almonds with the aid of an axe and a wooden bat. The almonds are roasted in heated metal plates, crushed in mortar and boiled in water to release the oil. The supernatant oil released by this process is removed from the cauldron after cooling and marketed at low cost on site. However, there is good potential to increase the income of many of these residents by a technological transfer from oil extraction by cold-pressing babassu while still respecting the sociocultural reality. Thus, an affirmative action policy for the installation of a chemical micro industry can recover the investment in about three years, considering the production of virgin oil and more favorable conditions for its marketing, which will also ensure the maintenance of these palm forests. Keywords: sustainable development, traditional community, public policy.
