Apparent digestibility of nutrients influenced by high dietary salt levels [quail]

Four groups of 6 female quail were fed with commercial feed mixture during 42 days long trial. Dietary salt levels were different among the groups. Feed for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th group contained 0.6, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 of NaCl, respectively. High dietary salt levels decreased apparent digestibilit...

Summary:Four groups of 6 female quail were fed with commercial feed mixture during 42 days long trial. Dietary salt levels were different among the groups. Feed for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th group contained 0.6, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 of NaCl, respectively. High dietary salt levels decreased apparent digestibilities of minerals, proteins and cellulose, but it had less effects on the digestibilities of extract and nitrogen free extract and consequently on energy. The real picture about the digestibility of some nutrients is questionable because of the different regulatory mechanisms caused by high turnover of water and because of the possible pathological changes on gut mucous membrane and because of the increase of endogenous fecal matters of metabolic origin.
