Summary: | Hematocrit, pH, standard bicarbonates, sodium, potassium and chlorine were examined at the beginning and 48 h after the appearance of diarrhea in newborn piglets (n=19) on the second or third day of life, immediately rehydrated with an oral electrolytic solution administered in doses of 1000-1500 ml per litter; and in healthy piglets (n=46). Early rehydration with the electrolytic solution caused an insignificant drop in hematocrits, sodium, potassium and chlorine, and an increase in the pH of blood despite a slight drop in standard bicarbonates, with a clinically sound condition of the piglets. Incompletely corrected acidosis indicates the necessity of a possible modification of the rehydration solution. |
