Summary:In samples from the principal olive orchard ares of Italy the three already known species of Hystripalpus living on Olea europea L. were collected: Hystripalpus oleae (Baker), H. olearius (Sayed) and H. olivicola (Peg. and Cast.). Moreover a new species, here described as H. rotai, was indentified and Tenuipalpus caudatus (Duges) was found for the first time on olive. The Italian material representative of the four species of Hystripalpus permitted a comparative study. For the first time the larva of H. oleae is illustrated and some distinctive characters, previously unrecorded, of male, female and nymphs of this species are pointed out. The four species of Hystripalpus are very similar in the adult stages for the following characters: reticulate pattern of dorsum, shape and length of rostrum, of rostral shield and of body setae, shape of spermatheca in the females, presence of two solenidions on tarsus II of males
