Summary:A technical report reviews current research concerning trends and social/cultural barriers towards US breastfeeding. It is noted that, while breastfeeding initiation in the US has increased in recent years, it usually is halted during early postpartum. It also is noted that white, middle-class, well-educated women tend to breastfeed the most and the longest. Factors affecting breastfeeding cessation, policy implications of mixed feeding patterns, and further needed research also are addressed.(wz)
