Summary:The role of the primary physician and the pediatrician in dealing with high blood pressure in children and adolescents is discussed. Lack of experience with chronic illness, the need for cooperating with university medical centers, the necessity of remaining current in the field, and the need for more accurate determination of high blood pressure in children complicate the physician's responsibilities. Guidelines are given for diagnosis, treatment, surveillance, and counseling the patient and his family.
