Effect of nitrogen fertilization in field trails conducted in commercial fruit orchards

Summary:Simple field fertilizer trials have been carried out in 30 commercial apple orchards in four fruit regions of Poland since spring 1987. In the first two years of study (1987 and 1988) a slight tendency to an increase of leaf N content as a result of increasing N fertilization (from 0 to 60 or from 60 to 120 kg N/ha) was noted; nevertheless only in few plots leaf N content was lower than 2.10% d.m. In a major part of trials no significant effect of N fertilization upon tree growth or yield indices was found and in the trials where significant differences were found the negative effects were as frequent as positive ones. Apparently, in apple orchards were wide herbicide strips are established and grass in alleyways is regularly mowed little response from N fertilization may be expected. However, a short period of trials does not allow to draw clear conclusions.
