Summary:Objective of this research was to improve a shrunken-2 single cross for high yield and good quality for the fresh market and processing. During 1988-91, inbred lines were extracted from Thai Supersweet Composite 1 DMR (TSC 1 DMR) and developed to the S9 generations. Six selected inbred lines and two commercial inbreds of SSWI 114 and SSWI 76 were used for making a diallel cross. Twenty-eight single crosses and two check varieties (HSX 27127 and TSC 1 DMR) were evaluated at Suwan Farm in the 1992 early and late rainy seasons. INSEE 1, the high-yielding hybrid with good eating quality developed from SSWI 114 x TSC 1 DMR-S8-8-2-2 (KSei 306), was selected for testing at five experiment stations in the 1993 rainy season. Results indicated that INSEE 1 gave higher unhusked ear weight (1,855 kg/rai) and husked ear weight (1,221 kg/rai) than those of HSX 11476 and HSX 27127. Its sweetness (14.7 percent brix) was slightly higher than HSX 11476, and it also gave better tenderness than HSX 11476 and HSX 27127. Its flavor was like HSX 11476, but better than HSX 27127. Ear length and ear diameter of INSEE 1 were 17.3 and 3.9 cm, respectively. Moreover, it had good agronomic traits, i.e., synchronization (50 and 51 days for days to tassel and silk, respectively) and medium plant and ear height (164 and 86 cm, respectively).
