Effect of lying box design on duration of lying and cleanliness of cows

Summary:The ethological observations and evaluation of cleanliness of 15 Holstein cows were performed successively in three types of lying boxes with curb and brisket board placed 2000 mm distant from rear of box (1st observation), 1800 mm (2nd observation), 1700 (3rd observation), and in a box with raised floor (4th observation). The average duration of total lying was almost the same during the day (763 to 767 minutes) during the 1st, 2nd and 4th observations. However, the longest duration of lying in box was in the longest box (763 minutes), and the shortest in the box with brisket board shortened to 1700 mm (641 minutes). The cows spent the most time lying in the alley (walkway) despite the grate in it. The duration of one lying in box was also the longest during 1st observation (131.9 min.) and cows lay down in the box 6.5 times over 24 hours. A shorter duration of one lying in box was during the 4th and 2nd observations, (98.2 and 92.7 min.) with an average frequency of lying of 8.1. The shortest duration of one lying was during the 3rd observation (88.1 min.) with the frequency of 7.6 over 24 hrs. The cleanliness of cows was good in stabling with litter lying boxes. The least soiled cows were noticed in the 2nd observation (1.96 point) in which the alley was also littered; the cows were less clean during the 4th observation (2.07 point). The cleanliness of cows in 1st observation was evaluated less favourably (2.13 points) in spite of the fact they did not lie in the corridor with grate. The most soiled cows were noticed during 3rd observation (2.46 points)
