Summary:Review about exploitation of gibberellic acid insensitive and sensitive dwarfing genes in world wheat breeding is presented. Shortening of coleoptile length at variety Astella (with Rht 1) and at newer varieties in comparison to old ones is documented by own results. In the set of 30 winter wheat varieties originated from local breeding or registered and grown in Slovakia, length polymorphism of microsatellite marker WMS 261 was analysed. Microsatellite locus WMS 261 is tightly linked to the dwarf gene Rht 8. 192-bp allele was prevalent, detected at 24 varieties (80 %). 165-bp allele was detected at varieties Diana I, Kosutka and Solaris. Only variety Torysa is with 174-bp allele. At plant height, differences between varieties with 165-bp allele and 192-bp allele were from 3 to 12 cm.
