Summary:Present and future trends of world cereal production and market is reviewed and the present situation, specifically of cereals in food security, is indicated. The FAO predicts that world supply and demand of cereals will be well balanced in 1998. In comparison with 1996, the situation has changed in Eastern Europe, particularly in Bulgaria. Significant state intervention in cereal production has varied between 19-25% over the last seven years in the Slovak Republic, while in the OECD countries the figures range between 35-44%. In Slovakia, establishing functioning channels for penetration of foreign markets and strengthening state support for export credits and operations will be required. Establishing a trade-marketing support centre is proposed
