Effect of hen weight at the start of laying on egg production and quality

Parameters of egg performance and quality were investigated over 300 days in a trial with egg-type hens Shaver Starcross 288 of different weights. Weight groups of hens (40 heads) were ranged from 1,345 g to 1,537 g at a difference of 64 and 65 g among groups. During egg laying, live weight of hens...

Summary:Parameters of egg performance and quality were investigated over 300 days in a trial with egg-type hens Shaver Starcross 288 of different weights. Weight groups of hens (40 heads) were ranged from 1,345 g to 1,537 g at a difference of 64 and 65 g among groups. During egg laying, live weight of hens increased by 20-24 percent. Increase was higher in hens at lower weights. Egg laying was higher by 4.7-5.1 percent in heavier hens, consumption of feedstuffs per egg and per g of egg mass being favourable in heavier hens. Weight of eggs, parts of eggs, yolk colour and quality of egg shell were influenced by higher weight of hens at the beginning of egg laying. Positive relations between hen weight and egg weight were observed
