Summary:Influence of planting densities on vegetative growth and generative development of cultivars 'Idared', 'Golden Delicious', 'Gloster', 'Jonagold' and its mutants and 'Elstar' and its mutants planted in single row system (2500, 5400, 6000 and 9000 trees/ha), double row system (16000), tree-row system (3200) and 'V' shaped system (3200 and 18000 trees/ha respectively) was studied on the Fruit Growing Centre Maribor - Experimental Station Ganik from 1992 to 1995. Different planting densities showed the effect on trunk growth, leaf area, number of flower clusters and number of fruits. Trunk growth increased with increasing planting density from 2500 to 5400 trees/ha and decreased with increasing densities from 6000 to 18000 trees/ha. Leaf area per hectare increased with increasing planting density and depended on yields in previous year. Optimal number of leaves per fruit was 20 to 30 depending on cultivar.
