Summary:Zasavje is situated in the hart of Posavje hills and is mainly placed in Prealpine phytogeographic region. Landscape is strongly marked by coal mining and parallel industry development. Traditional Zasavje's attachment to coal, its basic industry, and inconvenient meteorological conditions, are the main causes of vast pollution of the area. The air pollution in Zasavje has been monitored by the stations of analytical control alarm system, and ecological informational system of Trbovlje steam power station. The vegetation damage in Zasavje has been shown by forest records, lichen mapping, the monitoring of photo oxidants' influences on wild grown and cultivated plants, by analysis of biochemical parameters in spruce, and by tracing of heavy metals. This article presents geomorphological, climatic and vegetal characteristics of Zasavje region; its major pollution sources, and summarizes research results on air pollution, pollution of soil and vegetation of the area.
