Summary:An experiment was undertaken at Gezira Research Station Farm in season 2002-03 to evaluate the efficacy and selectivity of Pendimight and Harris, two new formulations of pendimethalin and oxyfluorfen, respectively. Onion (cv. Saggai) seedlings were transplanted on first week of Nov. Pendimight at 0.75 kg a.i./fed of Harris at 0.1 kg a.i./fed were applied immediately after transplanting as aqueous spray. Weeded and unweeded control in addition to the standards Stomp and Goal treatments were included for comparison. Pendimight at 0.75 kg a.i./fed, irrespective of supplementary weeding, gave 98 - 100; control of grasses early and late in the season. The same product without supplementary weeding displayed 50 - 87; control of broadleaved weeds. Stomp at 0.75 kg a.i./fed without supplementary weeding gave 96-98; control of grasses and 58 - 92; control against broadleaved weeds. Harris at 0.1 kg a.i./fed without supplementary weeding exhibited 77 - 94; control of grasses and 67 - 83; control of broadleaved weeds early and late in the season. Goal at 0.1 kg a.i./fed displayed weed control similar to Harris. All herbicides treatments reduced weed ground cover by over 70; and weed biomass by over 80;. There were no significant differences in man-hours required for supplementary hand weeding between pendimethalin formulations or between oxyfluorfen formations. All herbicides treatments significantly outyielded the weeded once, unweeded control, and resulted in yield comparable to weeded check. The Pests and Diseases Committee recommended the following herbicides: 1- Pendimight 500 EC at 0.7kg a.i./fed (1.5L per fed) is to be applied as preemergence weed herbicide, 2- Harris 240 EC at 0.1 kg a.i./fed (0.417L/fed)
