Summary: | The effectiveness of four pre-emergence herbicides for the control of annual weeds in garlic was evaluated in field trials over two seasons (1991/1992 and 1992/1993) at Hudeiba Research Sataion Farm, in the Nile State, Sudan. The herbicides, Ronstar (Oxadiazone) at 1.07 and 1.43, Goal (Oxyfluorfen) at 0.24 and 0.36 and Stomp (Pendimethalin) at 1.2 and 1.8 kg a.i. / ha, were applied pre-emergence to garlic. They gave selective control of most annual grass and broad-leaved weeds and significantly increased garlic yield over the weedy check. The increase in yield resulting from these treatments varied from 22 to 63 and was comparable with that obtained from weed free checks. The increase in garlic yield, due to the application of the herbicides, was mainly due to an increased number of cloves per bulb. The herbicide Gesagard (prometryn) reduced the growth of garlic and displayed high phytotoxicity symptoms. Yield reduction as a result of unrestricted weed growth ranged from 22 to 26 |
