Summary: | The aim of this study was to determine, based on measurement of blood NEFA and BHBA concentrations and calculation of their mutual correlation degree in different stages of productive-reproductive cycle, if blood BHBA is a valid parameter for determination of energy balance in high yielding dairy cows. Blood samples were taken from 378 healthy cows divided in six groups: group 1 - far off dry cows (n=64); group 2 - close up cows (n=62); group 3- cows at day 14 postpartal (n=66); group 4 - cows at day 60 postpartal (n=63); group 5 - cows at day 100 postpartal (n=62); group 6 - cows at day 150 postpartal (n=61). Concentrations of NEFA and BHBA were determined in blood samples. NEFA concentrations ranged from 0.24+/-0.16 mmol/L (group 2) to 0.45 +/- 0.17 mmol/L (group 4) while BHBA concentrations ranged from 0.45 +/- 0.17 mmol/L (group 2) to 0.75 +/-0.33 mmol/L (group 4). All values were within physiological values. Correlations coefficients between those two parameters were significant during all examined period, except 7 to 10 days before calving. Our results showed that changes in blood concentrations of NEFA and BHBA are in accordance with energy status of dairy cows in dry and lactating period and that BHBA concentrations may be used as a valid parameter for determination of energy balance in high yielding dairy cows. |
