Summary:Generative potential of hornbeam in the initial phase of fructification was analysed under optimal site conditions for hornbeam on a permanent sample plot in the region of Srem (Serbia). Seed yield was assessed based on the abundance of influorescences during the period of 2003-2008. The stand age was 30 year. The study results show that a reconstruction process in stands with hornbeam as the dominant species in the initial phase of fructification depends actually on the hornbeam seed bank in soil due to its dormancy. Successful regeneration of common oak can therefore be ensured by tight control of the regeneration of hornbeam and other secondary species in areas under regeneration during the initial phase. The process of hornbeam stand reconstruction in the stage of fructification is based on clear cutting and on artificial introduction of common oak acorns into the entire area.
