Summary:The purpose of the present trial was to improve both the identification techniques of halothane sensitive animals and the method of reducing their incidence. The first goal aimed to replace the old apparatus of anaesthesia, type AAV1 (license 67697/1979) with an electric apparatus of narcosis was made up in our institute in 1990. The results obtained making comparative tests using the two apparatuses revealed the same accuracy for both of them in the identification of halothane positive genotypes. The superiority of the second apparatus consists in a better efficiency (eliminates the oxygen cost) and in its reduced gauge that allows an easier manipulation in the pen, increasing the work productivity. The second goal aimed at reducing the stress susceptibility incidence and consists in the replacement of individual selection for halothane sensitivity with an improved halothane test which allowed the genotype structure knowledge of the Synthetic line 345 Peris population as well as the reducing of its positive halothane genotypes frequency (nn) from 10.7 to 6.6. per cent and of carrier genotypes (Nn) from 19.03 to 12.9.
