Summary:Vegetation period is one of the most important traits of wheat crop. It determines the optimum use of the climatic resources of the respective cropping zone, being at the same time an important factor in achieving high and sure yields. This paper deals with vegetative period both as a trait and as a means in wheat breeding, at S.C.A. Turda, in relationship with other traits, the heritability of this trait, the variability existing in the cultivars collection for vegetative period, as well as some achievements in wheat breeding at Turda, from the point of view of optimizing the vegetative period. The research performed shows that the reduction of vegetative period within certain limits is not negatively correlated with the yield of other yielding elements, fact which demonstrate1218s that on the background of an optimum vegetative period, other agronomical traits of wheat may be improved without any difficulties. As regards the genetic control of vegetative period, especially for precocity dominance effects are noticed, in the case of some combinations differentiated from the point of view of vegetative period, genetic additive effects were proved, fact which suggests the utilization of backcross, as a method for breeding the vegetative pe
