Summary: | Four hundred and seventy-five durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum (Desf.) Husn.) genotypes of different origin were screened at Meraro, Arsi Region, Ethiopia, for field resistance to stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis West.) under natural epiphytotic conditions during the 1990 and 1991 cropping seasons. Both leaf and spike infections were recorded. Reactions ranged from immunity to extreme susceptibility. Seventeen lines were resistant of which 13 were landraces. The two immune lines and the susceptible check (DZ-04-633) were also land-races. This extreme variation in the landraces may explain: (1) the sporadic nature of stripe rust in the durum wheat growing highlands of Ethiopia despite the conducive environment, and (2) the potential of the Ethiopian durum wheat landraces as sources of resistance. As a group, the landraces were more resistant to spike infection than introduced material or genotypes derived from Debre Zeit crosses; resistance seemed to be associated with lax-spike and shorter awns |
