Summary:In Portugal fusarium wilt of muskmelon, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. melonis, is an important disease. The fungus has four physiological races whose identity is determined by virulence to differential muskmelon cultivars. A prospection of the fungus was done in some Portuguese muskmelon growing regions (open land and greenhouse) and forty isolates of F. oxysporum f.sp. melonis were identified. Based on their virulence to differenttial cultivars 37 strains were assigned to race 1, one strain to race 2 and 2 strains to race 1,2. All the isolates collected in the open land belong to race 1
