Summary:Selecting for yield potential per si have changed morpho-physiological atributes related with the yield capacity of cereals. Comparing cultivars of bread wheat, durum wheat and triticale, developed during several years at Cereal Department in National Plant Breeding Station, it was evaluated the contribution of yield components, biomass and the efficiency of partitioning of assimilates in the progress of yield potential of each one of the species, in order to identify what are the best strategies for the future. Triticale showed progresses in all the studied characteristics. Durum wheat is the species with lower yields, and its weak yield parameters are biomass and number of grains/m2. Future breeding strategies for each one of the species should contemplate the possibility to increase biomass production and harvest index. On what concern to yield components, the number of grain/m2 should increase as for biomass, once all three different species had no changes in grain weight
