Summary:The problem of determining of organic substance in the ground is still not solved. The basic method used in laboratories is the ignition. The paper gives results of ground examination with regard to organic substance by means of the ignition and Tiurin methods; the latter is reliable one. The study was carried out on mixtures of mineral ground with peat as well as on natural mineral grounds. The application of the ignition method was found to be limited by great error especially in case of grounds with little content of organic substance. It may result in mistaken ground classification. The ignition method may be applied to grounds with great content of organic substance
