Effect of compensatory or accelerated growth of pubertal Simmental heifers on some performance traits and a subsequent milk yield

Summary:A total of 24 Simmental heifers during the rearing period and the 1st 100 days of lactation were assignated to three analogous groups (8 animals per group). From 6 to 11 and from 12 to 13 months of age, three different levels of feeding were used: a level recommended by IZ-INRA standards for weight gain of 700 g/day (group K), a varying level (stimulating compensatory growth) - by 15 percent lower in period 1 and by 15 percent higher in period 2 in relation to group K (group Z), a level higher by 15 percent (stimulating accelerated growth) in both periods in relation to group K (group W). From 14 months of age to 100 days of lactation, all heifers were fed as in group K. Due to the varying levels of feeding before and after puberty, the compensatory growth of heifers had a favourable effect on the secretory tissue content of the udder of pregnant heifers and their milk yield during the first 100 days of lactation, and compared to the high feeding level during this period, also on reproductive parameters
