Summary: | The Rice Drum Seeder plants rice seeds, preferably pregerminated, directly and efficiently in neat rows. Its use establishes a system of controlling weeds; thus, minimizing the application of herbicides. It is a simple, low cost, and manually-operated machine that uses a simple metering system through a cylindrical (drum) hopper. The drum's perforations on the peryphery at both ends control and regulate the seeding along the furrows in rows. The seeder developed by IRRI [International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] and PhilRice, comes in three models: the 8-row, the 10-row, and the 12-row, with different design features which provides efficient and easy seeding operation. The seeder offers the following advantages: 1) it facilitates chemical-free weeding methods (manual and mechanical) which minimize environmental pollution and hazards of chemical contamination to human and farm animals; 2) it saves labor costs (about P1200/ha) from transplanting and cost of seeds from wasteful broadcasting method (about P925/ha); and 3) it allows roughing, an operation necessary for seed production and seed certification, because of its uniform row seeding as compared to broadcast seeding |
