Life cycle of Callosobruchus chinensis L. and its resistance to mungbean (Vigna radiata)
Several mungbean entries were screened for resistance to Callosobruchus chinensis L. Results of both free choice and no-choice tests showed that TC 1966 was highly resistant while the Pag-asa series (1, 3, 5, and 7) were found susceptible. Summary: | Several mungbean entries were screened for resistance to Callosobruchus chinensis L. Results of both free choice and no-choice tests showed that TC 1966 was highly resistant while the Pag-asa series (1, 3, 5, and 7) were found susceptible. The life cycle of C. chinensis was also studied. It takes about 21 to 30 days for the bruchid to complete its life cycle. The eggs are laid on the seed coat while the larvae develop inside the seed completing four larval instars. The larvae feed on the seed leaving only the seed coat. Pupation takes place in a cell inside the seed and the pupae emerge through an exit hole made by the larvae. Adult life span ranges from 5 to 15 days. Description of the various stages is presented in the discussion |
