Summary:The incidence and severity of fungal and bacterial diseases on lowland potato crop grown in Telong, Kalentan, Bertam, Penang and Gajah Mati, Kedah [Malaysia] were monitored. Results showed that bacterial wilt and blackleg are the major diseases of potato in the lowlands. Heavy clay soils and waterlogged conditions in Bertam were unsuitable for potato and the resultant weak plants were easily subjected to bacterial infection. In Gajah Mati, high temperatures and infected planting materials were limiting factors. Fungal and bacterial diseases were minimal in the potato crop grown from tissue culture plantlets in Telong. To minimize disease incidence in potato, the use of disease-free planting materials is essential.
