Summary:A survey examined the agroecosystems, upland rice farmer practices and knowledge, and problems and potential solutions in Sitiung, Sumatra, Indonesia. Rice systems included permanent plow cultivation on level to gently rolling lands in earlier settled areas and shifting cultivation on sloping lands in later settled areas. Farmer problems leading to low or reduced rice yields were pigs, insects, weeds, poor or degraded soils (especially on lands cleared by bulldozer), rats, monkeys, and diseases. Researchers prioritized problems and suggest collaborative research to address them.
