Summary:Adaptation and acceptability of newly released varieties were undertaken following the Palaycheck system in six provinces in Northeastern Luzon. Thirty eight varieties in 22 sites were established during 2009 dry season (DS) and wet season trial (WS). Grain yield, preference standard and resistance to pest and diseases were the criteria used to determine the adapted and accepted varieties in the locality that is seldom reached by technology. There are 29 varieties yielded above 5 t/ha during the DS and WS varietal trial. NSIC Rc 128 was noted for bacterial leaf blight infection of 40% in one location during the WS trial. The most preferred varieties are PSB Rc82, PSBRc72H, NSIC Rc128, NSIC Rc156, NSIC Rc152 and PSB Rc18. The varieties are selected due to their agronomic traits such as productive tiller, long grain, long panicle and good crop stand. The varietal trial was a good tool to identify what variety is recommended in the locality. It also guides the farmers, on the characteristics of a rice crop they really wanted to cultivate in their farm. The additional productivity would translate to a profit that enhanced the economic condition of rice farmers.
