Summary:Microalgal isolates CdO-13 and Pal-04 were subjected to salt treatment at varying levels (viz., 60, 120, 180, and 240 mM). The effect of the various salt concentrations were evaluated during the logarithmic phase of growth by using chlorophyll a analysis and Coomasie blue protein assay. The presence of salt-induced proteins was determined by both SDS and native-PAGE. Analysis of growth curves showed that an inverse relationship exists between the amount of chlorophyll a and the level of salt stress. Increasing salt concentration resulted to a decrease in chorophyll a content, as well as decrease in growth. Total protein content decreased with increasing salt concentration during logarithmic phase. Evaluation of protein profiles with respect to the control showed absence of some bands, modification in intensity of other bands, and/or the presence of new bands, often referred to as salt-stress proteins (SSP)
