Summary: | A field experiment was conducted in Cavinti, Laguna [Philippines] during the 1988 wet season to determine the effect of P fertilization depth on growth and drought resistance of IR64. Four P treatments were imposed: (1) no P applied; (2) shallow, 50 kg P/ha applied as triple superphosphate between pairs of rice rows in the top 5 cm of soil; (3) deep, 50 kg P/ha applied as TSP in bands between pairs of rice rows at 25 cm soil depth; (4) shallow plus deep, 25 kg P/ha banded in the top 5 cm of soil plus 25 kg P/ha placed at 25 cm soil depth. Rice grown with P placed at 25 cm soil depth had more roots in lower, wetter soil layers and performed better during drought. Rice with deep P also had a greater ratio of deep-root to shoot dry weight. Deep placed P had the highest grain yield and biomass at harvest. |
