Summary:This report presents the results of a study to identify the major sources and types of greenhouse gas emissions in the production, distribution and use of natural gas in New Zealand; to review the existing information on these sources and to quantify the emissions for different greenhouse gases, and relate these to the gross energy delivered to consumers and typical consumer end needs; to develop a methodology for comparing the overall impact of carbon dioxide generation and the release of methane and other greenhouse gases from the natural gas system, the production of oil products, electricity generation and coal consumption in New Zealand; and to undertake a preliminary comparison of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with natural gas, petrol, coal and electricity in New Zealand.
