Summary:In tulip, flowering is very much advanced when bulbs are pre-cooled. This effect is gradually enhanced as the duration of the low-temperature treatment is increased. Moreover, bulb precooling induces an improvement of quality characteristics (length of flower stems, freshweight of flowers, etc.etc.) which is due to quality and quantity variations of endogenous plant hormones, like the gibberellins, induced by cold treatment. Since the best results in terms of flower quality are obtained by pre-cooling the bulbs for at least 75-90 days, researches were carried out at the Institute of General Agronomy and Herbaceous Crops, University of Bari, Italy, which were directed at identifying the possibility of using plant hormones (gibberellins) to replace pre-cooling, at least in part. Several techniques and different gibberellin concentrations were compared. A varying range of results was obtained for advanced flowering and for the quality characteristics of the flowers.
