Summary:The genus Piper is large, with a pan-tropical distribution. A considerable number of wild species are to be found in the Malaysian geo-political region. However, due to various factors the taxonomy of the genus in this area is in a very confused state. In this paper the wild peppers of Malaysia are introduced to the non-specialist, reasons for the taxonomic confusion of the genus in this area are put forward and some existing taxonomic arrangements of the genus into sections are discussed. Local uses of certain wild Bornean Piper species are mentioned and the potential of wild species in improvement work with the exotic and commercially important P. nigrum is examined.
