Summary:Two seedbox screening tests and a population growth test were used to determine the levels of whitebacked planthopper, Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) resistance in IR rice varieties developed by the International Rice Research Institute. Although the IR varieties were not bred for S. furcifera resistance, levels of resistance among varieties significantly differed depending on the test. Of the 27 IR varieties, (IR5 to IR62), 16 showed field resistance to S. furcifera as indicated by the susceptibility as seedlings in the standard seedbox test and resistance as older plants in the modified seedbox test. Population growth of S. furcifera was adversely affected by IR5, IR36, IR56, IR60 and IR62
