Summary:From rotted roots of apple trees a fungus was isolated and cultured on synthetic, semisynthetic and natural media. The media that favored vegetative growth of the fungus were: Malt + Thiamin-Agar at 25 deg. C. and alternate conditions of fluorescent light (12 hours) and darkness (12 hours). PDA. Oat-Agar and V8-Juice-Agar. The fungus produced asexual fructifications (synnemata) on infusion of apple tree sprouts-Agar, under continuous light and alternate conditions of fluorescent light and darkness. On Tomato-Agar and Oat-Agar media asexual fructifications also were formed. In moist chamber synnemata sprouted continuously until the diseased roots underwent disintegration. It was not possible to obtain the perithecial stage on the media utilized or to observe it on apple trees at the zone of study. According to the morphological characteristics of the mycelium and synnemata of the fungus, it may be concluded that it corresponds to the species Dematophora necatrix (Hart.) Berlese. Berlese.
