Summary:Winter eggs of P. ulmi can easily be removed by dipping pieces of twigs or branches in a solution of a ommercial detergent for 24 h and then washing them for 20 mn with water at a pressure of 2 kg/cm2 in a 500 ml spherical flask with a pipe soldered laterally at half of its height. The water output is filtered through 3 sieves with meshes of 1,0.5 and 0.12 mm respectively. The first two retain debris and the last, mite eggs which, after briefly homogenizing their distribution, can be counted under a binocular microscope on a limited number of sectors of a disc used for mite counts. This technique yields more than 80 % of the eggs present on the sample and saves a considerable amount of time.
