Summary:Salmonella-induced food poisoning in humans has been increasing since about 1989 in Japan. As hen's eggs and egg products are suspected to be the primary cause, protective measures against salmonella are needed for poultry farms. We evaluated protective measures against salmonella on training farms with much human interaction. As a result, no salmonella outbreak has occurred for 7 years since the introduction of the protective measures. This report presents an overview of our efforts. 1) Sanitary guidance and management. (1) Installation of wash baths for shoes and treading disinfection baths at the entrance to the poultry premises. (2) Installation of treading disinfection baths and disinfection baths for fingers at the entrance to each poultry house. (3) Periodic replacement of each disinfection bath. (4) Thorough clinical observation after transfer. 2) Tests for salmonellae. (1) Monthly salmonella isolation was performed on excretions, drinking water, and floating bacteria in poultry houses using salmonella isolation media. (2) Monthly anti-salmonella antibody measurement was performed using ELISA on serum collected from about 5% of the poultry. No salmonella outbreak occurred on our farms during 7 years with these measures, which are thus considered to be effective in facilities where visitors have contact with poultry such as egg-picking farms and tourist farms.
