Summary:'Shonan Candy Series' represents the three newly bred spray type cut rose cultivars, 'Shonan Candy Red', 'Shonan Candy Pink' and 'Shonan Candy Rouge'. 'Shonan Candy Red' was raised as a seedling from the cross of two unnamed selection lines in 1996 and has been applied for the registration for the Japanese Seeds and Seedlings Law in July 2001. Flower color is bright red. Flower shape is cupped with moderately sword-shaped petals. Average petal number is forty-four. Flower size is slightly larger than that of the ordinal spray type cultivars. Each flower stem usually bears five flowers, of which height is almost even. There are few lateral buds that secondary come into being. Cutting flowers can be constantly harvested throughout year and the maximum yield can be obtained by hydroponics such as rook wool culture. 'Shonan Candy Pink' and 'Shonan Candy Rouge' were developed from spontaneous mutants derived from the bud mutation of 'Shonan Candy Red' and have been also completed for the application for the Japanese Seeds and Seedlings Law in September 2003. Flower colors of 'Shonan Candy Pink' and 'Shonan Candy Rouge' are light and deep pink, respectively. Growth habit of the both cultivars is nearly the same with 'Shonan Candy Red'. Similar to ' Shonan Candy Red', these two cultivars are suitable for year-round cultivation in greenhouse, especially for hydroponics.
