Summary:Among the various solvent extracts of the bulbs and seeds of onion assayed for in vitro nematicidal activity against root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, hot methanol extract of defatted seeds exhibited significant activity. The active extract contained a compound which fluoresced in ultra violet light; it coloured pink when sprayed with diazotized sulphanilic acid followed by sodium hydroxide on a TLC plate. Free amino acids viz. leucine (isoleucine), aspartic acid, methionine and threonine each exhibited nematicidal activity, but to a much lesser extent than the extract itself [Tra i diversi estratti mediante solventi dei bulbi e dei semi di cipolla testati per l'attivita' nematocida in vitro contro il nematode galligeno Meloidogyne incognita, il metanolo caldo estratto da semi essiccati ha mostrato un'attivita' significativa. L'estratto attivo conteneva un composto che fluoresceva in luce ultra-violetta. Si colorava di rosa se spruzzato con acido sulfanilico diazotato seguito da idrossido di sodio su una superficie TLC. Gli amminoacidi liberi come la leucina (isoleucina), l'acido aspartico, la metionina e la treonina hanno mostrato, ciascuno, attivita' nematocida, ma in misura molto inferiore all'estratto stesso]
