Summary:During a clinical and epidemiological study on TBDs in Southern Italy, a clinical case of anaplasmosis from A. centrale was found. The cow was visited and its blood collected for hematological examinations; smears of blood and buffy coat were performed. PCR and Reverse Line Blotting (RLB) were also performed for biomolecular identification. It was readily possible to suppose, from clinical and hematological findings, that the cow was infected with a TBD, probably caused by A. marginale, but the central localization of the parasites in the erythrocytes on the blood smears suggested that A. centrale may be concerned. The biomolecular studies confirmed this aetiology. A. centrale, which is less pathogenic than A. marginale, is used to prepare a vaccine available in South Africa, Australia, South America, Middle East and in other parts of the world to protect against A. marginale. Analysis of the DNA sequences of our pathogen may reveal its origin. This is the first report in Italy on a clinical case caused by A. centrale Nel corso di un'indagine clinico-epidemiologica trasversale e' stato riscontrato un caso clinico di anaplasmosi bovina da Anaplasma centrale.
