Summary:The research work concerned aspects of floral biology and the necessity of cross-pollination for fruit set of seven olive cultivars, grown in Central Italy. As a first step, the self-fertility behaviour of those cultivars was studied from 1999 to 2001. The pollination tests checked the self-incompatibility of Orbetana, Dolce Agogia, Leccino and Maurino, in which the average fruit set was lower than 0.1 fruits per inflorescence. Nostrale di Rigali showed a varying degree of self-fertility. Frantoio cultivar showed self-fertility, but increased fruit set by cross-pollination. Cv Moraiolo was the most suitable pollinator for Dolce Agogia; Carolea, Dolce Agogia and Maurino for Leccino; Frantoio and Orbetana for Maurino; Leccino and Moraiolo for Nostrale di Rigali; Carolea and Kalamon for Orbetana; Kalamon, Moraiolo, Maurino, Carolea and Leccino for Frantoio. The blooming period was 6-10 day long; Dolce Agogia, Maurino, Leccino and Frantoio showed a contemporary flowering; Nostrale di Rigali was the earliest cultivar to bloom, followed by Carolea; the latest was Moraiolo
