Summary:In order to improve some of the open-pollinated populations of onion using method of line selection and producing synthetic populations, the experiment was carried out in Seed and Plant Improvement Institute in Karaj in2000-2005. The objective of this experiment was production of Inbred lines resulted from one generation of selfing and making the intercrosses between selected Inbred lines of two or more populations for production of synthetic population with desired traits such as yield and high storage ability. A minimum 100 bulb selected from a few populations such as; Sefide Kashan, Qermeze Azarshahr, Sefide Qom, Qermeze Ajabshir, Qermeze Bonab and Dorche Isfahan were planted in 2000 for selfing by using paper bag. In 2001, seeds which obtained from each lines of population separately cultivated in field trails by using randomized complete block designs with two replications. After harvesting and during storage period the lines of each population compared. The lines of each population were selected when the yield of line was higher than the total mean of yield and simultaneously having a lower sprouting percentage than the total mean of this trait. Therefore from populations of Sefide Kashan, Qermeze Azarshahr, Sefide Qom, Qermeze Ajabshir, Qermeze Bonab and Dorche Isfahan 20, 12, 19, 9, 7, 23 lines were selected respectively. In 2002, from the best selected lines of each population, the intact bulbs were planted and for intercrossing of the selected lines the isolation cages with common house flies were used. In 2003, the seeds of improved onion populations were planted and after harvesting, the bulbs transferred for storage. In 2004, for making the synthetic populations with desirable traits, intact bulbs of improved populations two by two were planted in an insect-proof pollination cages using common house flies as pollinators. Equal weights of seed taken from each parent line were bulked to give seed of the synthetic population. For comparing the synthetic, improved and originated populations the experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design with 3 replications in 2005. Among the populations which has been compared, improved population of Sefide Qom was a best treatment of its yield and storage ability. Synthetic population resulted from Qermeze Ajabshir with Sefide Qom was in second place which was in same group as synthetic population of Dorche Isfahan with Qermeze Bonab.
