Summary:In this study, two experiments were carried out separately: 1- Preliminary yield trial: In order to select superior lines for participating in advanced yield trial in next year, 120 barley lines and varieties (along with 4 checks) were evaluated during cropping season of 2004-2005 in eight moderate stations including Karaj, Birjand, Zarghan, Kerman, Varamin, Neishabour, Kallardasht and Esfahan. Plot size was 6m2. Some traits including: days to anthesis, resistance to faliar diseases ( Powdery Mildew and Helminthosporium ),percentage of lodging, plant height, days to maturity, cold tolerance, 1000 kernels weight and grain yield were recorded. In overall, based on grain yield average, superiority to the checks, rank mean ( R ), rank standard deviation and rest of recorded traits, 36 lines were selected. Grain yield average of the checks was 5.932 t/ha. twenty selected lines and varieties yielded more than average yield of the checks and the rest yielded similar or near. Lines 21, 69, 33, 86, 34 and 38 were the top yielding with 6.69, 6.62, 6.49, 6.40, 6.34 and 6.33 t/ha respectively. Among the top yieldings lines 21and 69 with the lowest rank mean and rank standard deviation showed the highest stability. 2- Preliminary screening nursery: In order to select superior lines for participating in preliminary yield trial in next year, 556 barley lines and varieties (along with 4 checks) were evaluated in observation nursery during cropping season of 2004-2005 in three moderate stations including Varamin, Birjand and Zarghan. Some traits including: days to anthesis, resistance to faliar diseases ( Powdery Mildew and Helminthosporium ), percentage of lodging, plant height, days to maturity and grain yield were recorded. In overall, based on grain yield average superiority to the checks and rest of recorded traits, 99 lines were selected. In this experiment, grain yield average of checks was 6.195 t/ha. 44 selected lines and varieties yielded more than average yields of the checks and the rest yielded similar or near. Lines 481(Productive//As46/Aths) and7(Friberga/Ste//(L.527//Bahtim-7DL/L.B.IRAN/Una8271/...)) were top yielding with 7.220 and 7.193 t/ha and the rank mean, 109.17, 30.17 and rank standard deviation, 105.37 and 45.77 respectively. Two superior lines had been selected from national crossing block program
