Summary:The utilization of saw-dust and top soil for seedlings medium was studied in the nursery of the Wanariset III Sangkulirang from March 17 to May 17, 1986. The saw-dust and top soil were taken from the forest concession of PT Sangkulirang at Pengadan, Sangkulirang. The best result of this study will be recommended to use to the timber companies especially in East Kalimantan that are preparing the site of seedlings. The experiment was conducted using the Randomized Complete Block Design with five treatments and three blocks. The treatments were the combination of top soil and saw-dust in five comparisons (top soil to saw-dust): 1/0, 1/1, 2/1, 3/1, and 1/2, while the blocks were species of three kind of seedlings: Acacia mangium, Pericopsis moniana and Leucaena leucocephala. The result showed that there was no significant difference effect among treatments but it was significant among blocks. The growth (height and diameter) of A. mangium, P. moniana and L. leucocephala yielded the best result at the comparison 1/0, 1/1 and 3/1, respectively, as compared with others. To conserve the top soil in the forest, it can be recommended to apply the use of saw-dust in the nursery
