Summary:The purpose of this experiment was to determine similarities and differences between two brown planthopper (BPH) population in the field, i.e. the IR 42 (North Sumatra) population that attacked rice variety IR42 in North Sumatra province 1981/82 and the Cisadane (Yogyakarta) population that attacked variety Cisadane in Yogyakarta province in 1985/86. Several techniques had been used to differentiate the two BPH populations namely modified screening technique, population build-up of the insect, and the growth rate index of the insect on a set of differential rice varieties, TNI, IR26, IR36, IR42, IR56, Mudgo, Rathu Heenati and Babawee. Results of the experiment showed very little differences between the two BPH populations. Both BPH population attacked the same varieties but the rate of IR42 (North Sumatra) BPH population caused damage on plant higher than that of Cisadane (Yogyakarta) BPH population
