Summary:The origin of the adzuki bean was from China, and at present the bean is grown largerly in East Asia regions (China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea). In the last five years, the plant acreage of adzuki bean in Japan and Taiwan decreased. The consumption rate of adzuki bean by Japanese is approximately 1 kg a year. The largest and the second largest exporter of adzuki bean to Japan is China and Taiwan, respectively. The adzuki bean seed contain 20-30 percent protein, 0.2-0.6 percent fat, and 55-69 percent carbohydrate. The amino acid, lycine, vitamin B, and potassium contents in bean seeds are higher than those of other legumes. Additionally, the seed contain saponine. The yield evaluation of AZ-7 genotype at an altitude of 450 m above sea level (Malang) in dry season of 1995 yielded of 1.36 t seed/ha, and 1.5 t seed/ha at an altitude of 800 m above sea level. Because of higher yielding potential of adzuki bean and its increasing demand in East-Asia countries, the bean cultivation in Indonesia is prospective Kacang merah diduga berasal dari Cina dan saat ini banyak dibudidayakan di kawasan Asia Timur (Cina, Jepang, Taiwan dan Korea).
